EMAGIC, born from collaborative efforts among students at the Patel College of Global Sustainability (PCGS) at the University of South Florida, champions the vision of dedicating an entire month to healing the Earth. We believe this extended focus, beyond just Earth Day, holds the potential to instill lasting green habits and pave the way for a brighter, more sustainable future.
In response to the environmental awakening spurred by the COVID-19 pandemic, EMAGIC stands as a beacon of hope. Our core belief is simple: by uniting globally for a month, we can catalyze significant environmental change and enable the Earth to regenerate. Through a series of educational initiatives, events, and actionable steps, we aim to mobilize communities worldwide in climate education, action, and healing.
Our mission extends beyond advocacy alone. EMAGIC strives to become a leading hub for global sustainability information, offering a wealth of resources, research, and events to inspire climate resilience and action.
At the helm of EMAGIC is Dr. Joseph Dorsey, creator of the initiative and professor of Concepts and Principles of Sustainability at PCGS. Driven by the vision of a living sustainability center run by passionate students, EMAGIC continues to evolve with each passing year. Join us in this vital journey – our institution is here to support, but it's your voice that sparks the change.
Derived from the United Nations Brundtland Commission, sustainability is defined as "Meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." Today, sustainability encompasses various definitions, all emphasizing the preservation of finite resources for the benefit of future generations.
In 2015, the 193 Member States unanimously adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, centered on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These goals call for global partnership and action to achieve development and prosperity. Recognizing the interconnected nature of social, economic, and environmental challenges, the SDGs provide a framework for addressing them holistically.
EMAGIC aligns with these goals, understanding that environmental regeneration cannot be achieved without social and economic empowerment.
The Patel College of Global Sustainability (PCGS) at USF, endowed by Drs. Kiran and Pallavi Patel, stands as the newest degree-granting college at the University of South Florida, with a distinct mission and approach. Established within the Patel Center for Global Solutions, PCGS aims to ensure the enduring and expansive nature of sustainability efforts at USF. It fosters natural interconnections among campus groups addressing ecology, economics, politics, and culture. PCGS recognizes the vital contributions of scholars and professionals in various fields, including engineering, business, architecture, urban planning, transportation, health, global studies, and the natural and social sciences. Its mission is to create and maintain conditions where humans and nature coexist harmoniously, meeting the social and economic needs of present and future generations.
